About

Biography

Joya Assael is an interdisciplinary artist and educator based in Richmond, VA. She graduated in May 2017, from the University of Pennsylvania, where she received a B.A. in Visual Studies. She worked in the commercial art world in New York City for 4 years before moving to Richmond, VA, to further explore her passion for art education.

Assael creates colorful, textured sculptures and prints, in which she explores the intersection of play and superstition, ritual and comfort, and surrealism and the home. She maintains a practice of public programming, teaching, and activist art making in community spaces. Her personal practice and her community practice have connected through the accessibility of the materials she uses and her admiration of the Why Cheap Art Manifesto of Bread & Puppet.
